Sightseeing Boat or Uzunomichi Walkway — Which Should You Choose?

There are two main ways to see the Naruto whirlpools: getting close to sea level on a sightseeing boat, or looking down from 45 meters above on the Uzunomichi (Uzu-no-Michi) walkway inside the Onaruto Bridge. The price difference is roughly four to one, but so is the difference in experience.

Point

The ideal combination: walk Uzunomichi first to grasp the scale, then board a sightseeing boat for the visceral experience. Total extra cost is around ¥2,510–¥3,010 (approx. USD 17–21) and about 1–1.5 hours. Time it around a spring tide peak and you can do both in one visit.

Info

By situation: Families with children or elderly travelers → Uzunomichi (indoor, budget-friendly, no reservation) / Maximum impact → Wonder Naruto (large boat, walk-up) / Unique experience → Aqua-Eddy (book in advance) / Short on time → Uzushio Kisen ferry (as short as 20 min)

Best Viewing Times and How to Use the Tide Chart

The whirlpools are a tidal phenomenon — they have nothing to do with weather. They peak several times a day on a schedule driven by the tides, and visiting at the wrong hour can mean seeing barely a ripple. Always check the tide chart before you go.

Spring Tides Produce the Biggest Whirlpools

Around new moon and full moon (roughly twice a month), the tidal range in Naruto Strait reaches its maximum — these are called spring tides (大潮, ōshio). The two hours either side of peak tidal flow on a spring tide day are the best time to visit.

  • Spring tide: best viewing within 2 hours of peak flow
  • Neap tide: within 1.5 hours of peak flow
  • Slack neap: within 1 hour (whirlpools will be small)
  • Best seasons: late March–April and September–October, when spring tides reach their annual maximum

Each boat operator and Uzunomichi publish tide calendars on their official websites showing the optimal viewing window for each day. Once you know your visit date, find the peak flow time and work backwards to choose the right departure.

How to Read the Tide Chart (3 Steps)

Even first-timers can find the best viewing window in three steps.

  1. Find a date marked as spring tide (大潮) on the calendar — these occur roughly twice a month, around new moon and full moon
  2. Note the “peak tidal flow” time listed for that day
  3. The 2-hour window around that time is prime viewing — choose a boat departure that falls within it

Sightseeing Boat Options and How to Book

Three boats depart from the Kameura area on the Tokushima side: a large ferry, an underwater observation boat, and a smaller high-speed vessel. Each has a different boarding point, capacity, and booking requirement.

Wonder Naruto (Large Sightseeing Boat)

A 399-passenger ferry that takes you right up to the whirlpools at sea level. As the boat approaches a vortex, a low rumble rises from the water and the surface begins to spiral and pull — all visible from the open deck. No reservation needed.

  • Price: ¥2,000 / approx. USD 14 (adult), ¥1,000 (elementary school children)
  • Duration: approx. 30 minutes
  • Departure: Kameura Kanko Port (inside Naruto Park) / 9:00–16:20, 12 departures/day (to be verified)
  • Reservation: not required — purchase tickets up to 10 minutes before departure
  • Operator: Naruto Kankō Kisen, tel. 088-687-0101

Aqua-Eddy (Underwater Observation Boat)

Below deck, an observation room sits 1 meter under the surface. Looking up through the glass, you watch the vortex swirl overhead — water twisting above you, bubbles streaming past the window. It’s a completely different view from anything on deck. Only 46 seats, so book early.

  • Price: ¥2,500 / approx. USD 17 (adult), ¥1,200 (elementary school children)
  • Duration: approx. 25 minutes
  • Departure: Kameura Kanko Port / 9:15–16:15, 15 departures/day
  • Reservation: required for all departures (online from 4 days prior / phone: 088-687-0101)
  • Note: may be cancelled in rough weather

Warning

Aqua-Eddy sells out days in advance during Golden Week and on spring tide weekends. Book online as soon as your visit date is confirmed.

Uzushio Kisen (High-Speed Boat)

This boat departs from Kameura Fishing Port, about a 5-minute walk from the Otsuka Museum of Art — making it the most convenient option if you’re combining the museum and whirlpools in one day.

  • Price: ¥2,000 / approx. USD 14 (adult), ¥1,000 (children), free for toddlers — cash only
  • Duration: approx. 20 minutes (to be verified)
  • Departure: Kameura Fishing Port (behind the Otsuka Museum of Art)
  • Reservation: not required (to be verified)

Uzunomichi: The Walkway Inside Onaruto Bridge

Uzunomichi (渦の道) is a 450-meter promenade built inside the lower girder of Onaruto Bridge, 45 meters above the strait. Glass floor panels let you look straight down at the whirlpools below — and at one-quarter the price of a boat ticket.

The glass floor of Uzunomichi. The tidal currents of Naruto Strait churn 45 meters below your feet. The “Caution: Slippery” sign somehow makes the drop feel even more real.
  • Price: ¥510 (~USD 3.50) adults / ¥410 middle & high school / ¥260 elementary / free under 6
  • Hours: Mar–Sep 9:00–18:00 / Golden Week & summer vacation 8:00–19:00 / Oct–Feb 9:00–17:00
  • Closed: 2nd Monday of March, June, September, and December
  • Reservation: not required
  • The bridge is exposed to strong crosswinds — bring a jacket on windy days

Because you’re walking inside the bridge structure, Uzunomichi stays open in the rain — a useful fallback on overcast days when you still want to see the whirlpools. From the glass floor, the height catches most visitors off guard; knees have been known to go weak.

Getting to Naruto

Naruto Park is a direct highway bus ride from Osaka and Kobe. From Tokushima city it takes about an hour by train and local bus.

From Osaka or Kobe

The highway bus is the simplest option — no transfers, direct to Naruto Park.

Info

The highway bus stop “Naruto Koen-guchi” (鳴門公園口) is drop-off only. For the return journey, walk 10–15 minutes to “Kosoku Naruto” (高速鳴門) bus stop to board (to be verified).

Info

Via Awaji Island: If you’re driving from Osaka or Kobe, consider stopping at Fukura Port on the southern tip of Awaji Island for the Uzushio Cruise (¥3,000 / approx. USD 21, approx. 60 min). It takes longer than the boats on the Tokushima side, but pairs well with a day trip around Awaji Island.

From Tokushima City

The standard route is JR Naruto Line to Naruto Station, then a local bus to the park — a two-leg journey from Tokushima Station.

  • JR Tokushima Station → JR Naruto Station (JR Naruto Line): approx. 45–50 min, approx. ¥540 (~USD 4) (to be verified)
  • Naruto Station bus stop → Naruto Park (Tokushima Bus): approx. 25 min
  • Alternatively, a direct bus from Tokushima Station to Naruto Park runs in approx. 66 min (to be verified)

Combining Naruto with the Otsuka Museum of Art

The Otsuka Museum of Art (大塚国際美術館) is inside Naruto Park — a museum displaying full-scale ceramic reproductions of famous Western masterpieces, from the Sistine Chapel ceiling to Monet’s Water Lilies. At ¥3,300 (approx. USD 23) it’s not cheap, but it’s only a 5-minute walk from the Uzushio Kisen boarding point, so the combination is natural.

Warning

The Otsuka Museum is enormous — allow 3–4 hours to do it justice. A practical schedule: museum in the morning, then time the afternoon boat to coincide with the day’s spring tide peak.

Many visitors build a broader “Seto Inland Sea art route” that includes Naoshima island (reached by ferry from Takamatsu). Kagawa, Ehime, and Tokushima can comfortably be linked in a multi-day Shikoku itinerary.

Where to Stay Near Naruto

If the day’s best tide window falls early morning or late evening, staying overnight in Naruto lets you hit peak viewing time without rushing. Hotels near Onaruto Bridge offer ocean views of the bridge and strait — the sound of the current carries through open windows at dusk. Budget from around ¥10,000 (approx. USD 70) for a simple room; open-air hot spring resorts run ¥20,000–¥30,000 (approx. USD 140–210).

  • Aoawo Naruto Resort: oceanfront resort inside Setonaikai National Park, all rooms with ocean view, hot spring on-site
  • Naruto Grand Hotel Kaigetsu: near Naruto Park, rooftop open-air bath with panoramic views, local sea bream cuisine
  • Resort Hotel Moana Coast: all rooms with private open-air bath, free shuttle from JR Naruto Station
  • Hotels in Tokushima city: wider selection and lower prices; good bus access to Naruto

Summary

The quality of your Naruto whirlpool visit depends almost entirely on two decisions: which viewing method you choose and when you arrive. Get the tide chart right and the rest falls into place.

  • On a budget: Uzunomichi walkway (¥510 / ~USD 3.50). Want the full impact: sightseeing boat (¥2,000–¥2,500 / ~USD 14–17)
  • Aqua-Eddy (underwater boat) requires advance booking — sells out days ahead on spring tide weekends
  • Prime viewing is within 2 hours of peak tidal flow; check the tide chart before you finalize any departure time
  • Best seasons: late March–April and September–October during spring tides
  • If combining with the Otsuka Museum of Art, budget 3–4 hours for the museum and plan the boat around the afternoon tide peak
  • Direct highway bus from Osaka takes about 2 hours and costs around ¥3,100 (~USD 21)
